Bulgaria has always been a crossroad between Asia and Europe. There is much to see in our small country – cultural and historical highlights from various historical eras: the oldest collection of gold artefact in the world, the Thracian gold and silver treasures dating about 4th century BC, tombs and temples, archaeological sites of the Hellenic era, Roman and Byzantine castles, historical monuments from the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdom, architectural ensembles as well as entire settlements that have preserved their authentic atmosphere and architecture.
The best known of these are: Veliko Turnovo and Arbanassi, the Old Plovdiv, Tryanva, Koprivshtitsa, Bansko, Melnik, Bojentsi. Bulgarian monasteries are unique samples of the iconography, woodcarving and architecture.
Seven cultural sites and two nature reserves are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List: The Rila Monastery - the biggest sanctuary in Bulgaria; The Thracian Tomb in Sveshtari village, The Kazanlak Thracian Tomb, The Madara horseman bas-relief, The Boyana Church near Sofia, The ancient city of Nessebar on the Black Sea Coast , The rock monasteries and churches in Ivanovo.
All these sites, together with the rich traditions in the folk music, dances and customs make Bulgaria an incredible tourist destination.
