BELOGRADCHIK - CHIPROVTSI

This tour is initiated to the north - west part of Bulgaria which although is not so frequently visited by tourists, impresses with its undiscovered nature phenomenons.

Day 1 Transfer Sofia – Belogradchik. En route visiting the Magura cave which is hollowed out in the Rabisha hill limestone. The Magura is one of the largest caves in Bulgaria. The total length of the galleries, discovered till now, exceeds 2000 m. It consists of one main gallery, pointing southeast - northwest and three side branches. “Pearls‿ of the cave are the unique paintings on stone. The Magura drawings define its function as a temple for a long period of time - from The Neolith till The Iron age. The images are in analogy to those in famous cultural centres in Italy, The Iberian peninsula and middle Asia. They represent dancing women, dancing and hunting men, disguised men, large variety of animals, suns, stars, tools of labour, plants etc. Next to the cave is the Rabisha Karst Lake.
Arrival in the city of Belogradchik - picturesquely spread over the western part of the Stara Planina Mountain. The most attractive landamrks in Belogadchik area are Belogradchik sandstone rocks, famous for its fantastic outlines - silhouettes of people, towers, ships, mushrooms, obelisks, palaces, and animals. Most remarkable are Pine Stone, Adam and Eve, Sphinx, Schoolgirl, Nun, Bear. There one can find the fortress of Belogradchik built by the Ottoman conquerors on the remains of the Roman fortress. It was used for the last time during the Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885. It has been restored and arranged as an open-air museum.

Day 2 Transfer Belogradchik – Chiprovtzi. For a long period of time Chiprovtzi was the seat of the Bulgarian Catholic custody. There are traditions in the crafts the famous of which is the rug industry. There is no evidence so far of carpet-weaving before the 17th century, but the perfection of the design, composition and colour schemes of the oldest rugs is indicative from long since. There is a school of carpet weaving in the town where tradition continues. From Chiprovtzi, the carpet industry spread to the near by villages, where women have been engaged in rug-weaving for centuries ever since. This contributed to the fame of the Chiprovtzi rugs - both in Bulgaria, and on the Asian and Central European markets.
