About 20 km south-east from Sandanski is the smallest town in Bulgaria - Melnik, named after the sandstone pyramids embracing it and famous for its robust red wine and impressive old houses. The original Revival architecture of the Melnik houses with their famous underground wine-cellars, the ruins of the old-time splendor such as the 13th century Boyar House, and the remains of numerous churches, are the reason for Melnik to become an architectural reserve.
